The Full Moon Party is one thing to put on your bucket list if you like absurdly large parties on the beach. There are two parties a month on Koh Phangan: The Half Moon Party and the Full Moon Party (largest). Also, you will find pre and after parties on other smaller islands near by.
However, with any large event, there are things you should be aware of before hand. Let me break down a few things I learned from going.
Getting from Bangkok to Koh Phangan
There are a few ways to get to Koh Phangan. It all depends on your budget and how long you want to travel for. Want a 3-5 hour journey or do you want a 10-14 hour journey? Spend $150+ or $40+? It’s up to you. So, here are the ways.
Planes leave Bangkok to Koh Samui throughout the day. The ticket prices range anywhere from $70-$250 depending on when you book. I you are purchasing near the Full Moon Party date, plan on spending a lot. Flights take about 1hr to arrive to Koh Samui. Once, in Samui you will need to book a boat to Koh Phangan. Boats to Koh Phangan cost anywhere from 500-1,000 Baht. Click here for Google Flights search tool.
Most backpackers will use a bus company to get to either Suratthani or Chumphon. From these locations you will take a ferry to either, Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, or Koh Tao. It’s your choice if you would like to stay on Koh Phangan during the Full Moon Party or stay on Samui and take a boat to the party.
Buses cost 900 – 1,500 baht. Here is a good place to look for tickets.
Tips for the Full Moon Party
Leave your expensive items at home
Pack light to the party. Only bring items you won’t mind getting lost or stolen. Phone and enough money will do! I didn’t have any problems, however with any large crowd you should always be careful.
Save money by buying alcohol at the liquor store.
There are a few ways to enjoy cheaper alcohol prices. Here are a couple of them.
1. Buckets on the beach cost anywhere from 200-300+ Baht. You can save money by walking inland a block and buying a bucket from the vendors there. Those usually cost 100-250 Baht
2. Buy your own bottle of liquor from the liquor store on the island. A short 4 min walk down the main street, you will find entire bottles from 120-300+ Baht. (Buckets normally have 2 or 3 shots worth)
You could even buy your own bucket and bring to the party. It’s always a cool feeling to be dancing around with a bucket full of alcohol.
Have a meet up point at the end of the night.
People get drunk, phones get lost, and batteries die. If you are with multiple people (Or even 1) agree on a meet up spot if you can’t find each other by a certain time. I can’t tell you the amount of people at the pier that had no way of finding their friends because their phone died. Don’t be that person.
I would advise against taking drugs other than alcohol. There are many locals that will try and sell you different substances. Keep in mind that you have no idea what you are taking, you are on a Island with no real hospital, and you can go to prison. Yes, PRISON. Also, I’ve heard of locals turning you in to the police. Not telling you to not have fun.. Just saying.. Be careful.
Go check out other parts of the island the day before or after.
Koh Phangan is a beautiful island! Have fun and experience the other side of the island most people don’t see. You won’t regret it.
